your diet is not only what you eat
and exactly how to fix it | fhg #58
Happy Sunday financial hotties! I’m 2 weeks into the lock-in, and it has got me thinking a lot about my diet.
And when diets come up, we talk a lot about what goes into our body, but not quite enough about what goes into our brain.
I’ve come to realise that your diet is not only what you eat. It’s everything you consume:
What you read
What you scroll
What you listen to
What you buy
Who you spend time around
And in the same way that ultra-processed foods tend to dull your energy and sharpen your cravings, consuming the wrong emotional, financial and mental inputs can leave you stuck in a life that (slowly) doesn’t even feel like yours.
I know this because I lived it for almost a decade.
So if your life feels a bit like you’re cosplaying someone else, or your goals feel blurry right now - your diet might be the first place to look.
𝜗ৎ In this issue:
Places you’re likely overconsuming
Social media really seems to be the source of most problems these days, but for our brain diet, it all begins here. We’re not conditioned to be exposed to the sheer amount of data, information, and stories we see online:
Productivity content that makes you feel behind
Outfit links and Amazon hauls
Highlight reels from people with no context
It’s not that these are bad. But when they’re consumed in excess — or unconsciously — they suffocate your sense of self. And that affects how you treat your money, your time, your choices.
It makes you reactive instead of intentional, because you actually have less mental space to prioritise your own thoughts.
Try this 3-part input audit
If your non-food diet is starting to feel like actual junk food, here’s a short audit to run this week:
1. Your social scroll
Mute or unfollow 3 accounts that make you feel anxious or inadequate (go off of your gut feeling as soon as their content comes up)
Follow 3 that genuinely inspire you to take action or think differently. A few I love: @moneywithkatie, @faganchelsea, @shamelesspodcast
2. Your media intake
Replace 1 hour of passive content consumption with a rich input:
→ Newsletter: The Sociology of Business or Social Currency (tell Sammi we sent you!)
→ Podcast: I Will Teach You To Be Rich, Money with Katie (again!), How I Built This
→ Books: read outside of your normal interests!
3. Your self-talk
Replace one repetitive thought loop this week.
From…
To…
I’m so bad at saving
I haven’t been taught this in a way that works for me yet.” or “This is still new for me, and that’s ok.
I should be further ahead my now
I’m learning at the pace of my actual life, not someone else’s highlight reel.
I can never afford nice things
I’m prioritising what matters most right now, and the important thing is that I have the power to do that.
I need to fix everything at once
One solid change today is better than ten perfect changes never.
What this has to do with money
Everything!
If there’s anything I teach as a Financial Hot Girl, it’s that your financial habits are a direct response to your mental, physical and emotional inputs.
If you constantly consume urgency, noise, or pressure… you’ll overspend, procrastinate, or panic-budget (then splurge).
You’ll set goals that aren’t yours, and buy things that don’t make you feel better.
That’s why I don’t just teach you financial concepts. I teach you how to apply and take action on the content you consume to live a better life.
How to consume more intentionally
If your diet is everything you consume mentally and emotionally, you also need a way to make use of the good stuff you do consume.
And if you’re anything like me, you’ve got saved videos, screenshots, and podcast notes piling up. I’ve just given you more in this issue. And when life gets busy, it’s hard to turn that information into action.
So that’s what I’m building Earn, Keep, Grow™ to solve.
I’m an older sister at heart, and always will be. I’m obsesses with helping you and making a real difference in your life.
I know that the problem isn’t you being able to find better (or more) information to consume. It’s that you don’t know how to take action on the information when you consume it.
So what I’m building is a system to help you synthesise, prioritise, and implement what you already know (or what you might learn in the future) and figure out how to actually USE it.
💻 I’ll be building it in public over the next few weeks! Follow along on IG.
